But, by federal law, the possession of Cannabis (marijuana, marihuana, bhang, hashish, pot, grass, weed, hemp, hash, ganja) is illegal in the United States, except within approved research settings. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved cannabis as a treatment for cancer or any other medical condition. The US National Cancer Institute (NCI), has included the recent laboratory and animal studies showing that cannabinoids, the chemical components of Cannabis (the two best studied components are the chemicals THC and cannabidiol ), may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells. These studies are considered by the NCI as preclinical. They were all done using animals. According to them, no clinical trials of cannabis use for the treatment of cancer in humans have been published. In terms of the substances in smoke, Cannabis smoke contains many of the same cancer causing substances (carcinogens) as tobacco - at least 50 of them. In addition, cannabis is often mixed with tobacco when smoked. The human “clinical trials” researches of the anticarciogenic properties of Cannabis have probably been done now in some countries.
